This phenomenon has been growing for years. In 2017, [Deloitte](https://www2.deloitte.com/global/en/pages/about-deloitte/articles/millennial-survey-making-impact-through-employers.html) found that millennials, in particular, feel a sense of accountability for a wide range of issues, and that “it is primarily in and via the workplace that they feel most impactful.” The next year, [Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-business-socialissues/u-s-workers-want-employers-to-step-up-social-impact-survey-idUSKCN1NY00V) reported that “U.S. workers want employers to step up social impact.” The desire for impact has grown even stronger in recent years. In a survey, nearly [two-thirds](https://www.mckinsey.com/business-functions/people-and-organizational-performance/our-insights/help-your-employees-find-purpose-or-watch-them-leave) of employees said Covid-19 has caused them to reflect on their purpose in life. In fact, one of the [biggest driving forces](https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/how-employers-can-stem-the-costly-great-resignation%3A-build-employee-fulfillment-through) behind the so-called “Great Resignation” is the desire for work that's more fulfilling. And impact is a [hallmark](https://www.forbes.com/sites/kathycaprino/2018/12/10/4-ways-to-help-your-employees-experience-more-fulfillment-and-why-you-need-to/) of what makes people feel fulfilled in their jobs. I’ve spent my career in energy -- first as a change leader inside oil and gas companies, and now as head of my own startup, ALLY.
