The (Re)Framing of Equity with Dr. Jobi Martinez

Since the concept of equity in the workforce was introduced through affirmative action laws and policies, the concept of diversity has encountered legal, political, social, and cultural challenges. These challenges have led to the reframing of equity and has impacted its reach and outcomes. While the concept has expanded to be more inclusive, the reframing of diversity has presented challenges that often advance challenges for this work. Come learn from Dr. Jobi Martinez, Chief Diversity Officer at Harris Health System, who possesses over 25 years of experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion.  Dr. Martinez also researches and guides strategic communication.  This session will explore how equity is reframed with time and how it creates opportunities and challenges for this work. Jobi Martinez, Ph.D. currently serves as the Vice President & Chief Diversity Office for Harris Health System.

About Dr. Jobi Martinez

Dr. Martinez possesses over 20 years of experience in leading, developing, and advising diversity, inclusion, equity, access, and justice initiatives. Prior to joining Harris Health System, Dr. Martinez served as the Executive Director of the Racial Justice Institute and as an Executive Consultant for EPIC Collaborative Advisors and the National Diversity Council.  companies. Dr. Martinez has also served in various diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) roles in higher education; specifically at the University of Houston-Downtown and Texas Tech University (TTU). During her time in higher education, she also served as the Vice-President and President of the Big 12 Chapter of Diversity Officers in Higher Education and founding member of the Texas Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education.

Dr. Martinez was recognized and nominated for these leadership positions because of her innovative leadership and work in the DEI space. In 2018 and 2019, she was recognized as a National Thought Leader for her work and research in DEI strategic communication and strategic management. Dr. Martinez holds a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations, a Master’s in Public Administration, and a Ph.D. in Media and Communication with an emphasis in DEI strategic communication. Dr. Martinez was born and raised in Muleshoe, Texas.
